Medical Equipment

Does Medicare cover medical equipment?

Medicare and most other plans cover some durable medical equipment, but coverage is decided item by item and plan by plan. Equipment is usually covered when a doctor documents that it is needed at home, and many items need a prescription or prior authorization. The only reliable answer is the one for your plan — call either of our medical equipment stores and our team will check it with you.

What we bill differs by store. Each store below lists what it accepts.

How does Medicare handle durable medical equipment?

Medicare generally treats durable medical equipment as a benefit separate from prescription drugs, and it usually requires that a doctor document why the equipment is needed in the home. What you pay, and whether an item is covered at all, depends on the item and on the specific plan you carry. Bring your plan details when you call and we will look at them with you.

What about Medi-Cal in California?

Medi-Cal covers certain durable medical equipment for members who qualify, and coverage rules and documentation requirements differ from Medicare. Requirements change over time, so the practical step is to call our Whittier store with your plan information rather than rely on a general rule.

What about Medicaid in Nevada?

Nevada Medicaid also covers certain durable medical equipment for members who qualify, with its own rules and paperwork. Call our Las Vegas store with your plan information and our team will check what applies to the item you need.

What should I have ready when I call?

Have your insurance card, the item you are trying to get, and your doctor’s information if you already have a prescription. That is usually enough for us to tell you what your plan requires and what the next step is.

How do I check my coverage?

Call either medical equipment store. Our team will look at your plan with you, tell you what documentation is needed, and coordinate with your doctor’s office when a prescription is required.

Common questions

Does Medicare cover a hospital bed?
A hospital bed can be covered when a doctor documents that it is needed at home, but the details depend on your plan. Call us and we will check your plan with you.
Does insurance cover CPAP supplies?
Many plans cover CPAP supplies on a replacement schedule, which varies by plan. Call the store with your plan details and we will confirm what yours allows.
What plans do you accept?
It depends on the store. Our Whittier store accepts most plans; our Las Vegas (Del Webb) store bills only the Department of Labor — Energy Workers Program, or takes cash pay. Call the store you plan to use and our team will go through it with you.
Do I need a prescription?
Some equipment requires one and some does not, and some plans require documentation even when the item itself does not. Call us and we will tell you what applies.

These answers are general information, not medical advice. Ask our pharmacist about your equipment, and talk with your doctor about your treatment.
